‘She Says’ – An artistic exploration into human emotions

Malta Independent Saturday, 27 January 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

She Says is Ivan Saliba’s first solo exhibition which will be held at Gallery Last Touch in Mosta.

The exhibition is made up of a composition of seven artworks that were made with the aim to create one environment made up of minimal, abstract, figurative shapes, space and colour. Using a balance of textured whites and greens and culminating the whole theme in a single red-based artwork which Ivan calls “the leader”, the set of artworks expresses different thoughts of six girls.

As he himself said, what inspires him most in his artistic expressions are the things that he doesn’t understand in other people. Six different girls were chosen to write their most important sentence at that point in time. These six sentences were eventually used as titles for six of the seven artworks. Through these sentences, issues focusing on love, passion, destiny and illusion were revealed while the set of art pieces give a physical interpretation to these thoughts.

The seventh artwork, the leader, connects the pieces together through an inspiration known to the artist himself.

Ivan Saliba is a motions graphic designer by trade where after following a four-year diploma in Industrial Design at the Arts and Design Centre in Valletta, he established himself as one of the most creative individuals in the industry and has been working for the past six years with one of the leading production houses on the island, Blaze Productions. Through his work, Ivan has learnt to develop his technical and artistic skills while producing work for all local television stations and several established local clients.

Even though Ivan has experimented with several media, from wood to metal, from fibre glass to paper, he finds it better to work at his computer and create his art through 3D vector-based programmes such as Maya and other photo-editing software to perfect his illustrations.

She Says will open at Gallery Last Touch in Main Street, Mosta on 9 February. The exhibition will be open till 24 February. Gallery Last Touch is open from 8am to 7pm daily.
