Wasting Time

Malta Independent Saturday, 27 January 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 19 years ago

I think the European Union will be wasting its time and funds if it continues to chase the ratification of the Constitution when there is clear evidence that it will never be accepted unanimously.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s speech to the European Parliament was widely covered by the media, but although her attempts to revive the debate on the Constitution on the one hand were received with optimism, on the other hand, the sceptics were once again out in full force.

I think it is next to impossible for 27 states – yes, now they are 27 – to come to an agreement on the said Constitution, particularly if some of them will need to hold referenda in their country to be able to say “yes” or “no”.

It would be perhaps more important for the European Union to concentrate on more important matters, such as global warming and climate change, alternative energy and irregular immigration, rather than waste so much time on something that was declared dead two years ago.
