First let me say that our family really enjoyed a trip to your wonderful island a few years ago and that another visit of Malta has been high on our “to do” list.

However, I heard from friends as well as in a report broadcast on a German TV station of the terrible cruelty to animals – from tortured, shot, hanged or burnt, malnourished stray dogs and cats to public dogfights. This has shocked us deeply.

Not only does Malta not provide any funds for sheltering and spaying of stray dogs and cats, but there also seems to be no law against barbaric traditions. Nobody cares that the dog-fighting mafia keep their dogs in tiny dungeons on the city wall! All this is obvious to anyone but the authorities don’t react.

As beautiful as Malta is, with its thousands year old stone-age temples and great medieval buildings, sadly we can’t travel to an island that lacks the most basic humanity when it comes to animals. In a time when Spanish and Italian communities work closely with native and foreign animal welfare groups to solve the problem of stray dogs and cats and t the dog fighting mafia, Malta’s officials don’t seem to care.

That’s why we are going to spread our protest on the Internet and protest to every major German and Austrian newspaper before every holiday season. Moreover, we will do everything necessary to keep as many of our relatives, friends and colleagues from choosing Malta for holidays, as long as Malta does not enact and enforce a harsh animal protection law and provides funds for large no-kill (!) stray animals shelters.
