Team Chaudron wins best team contest whilst basketball referee Bernard Vassallo wins the official of the year award
Shooters William Chetcuti and Rebecca Madyson were voted as the best athletes of the year 2006 yesterday in the final night held at The Westin Dragonara.
This was the highlight of the 46th edition of the contest organised by The Ghaqda Kittieba Sports.
William Chetcuti had a very close contest with European snooker champion Alex Borg. Chetcuti totaled 409 points followed by Alex Borg with 378 and Massimo Cremona third with 322 points.
Australian based Rebecca Madyson won the sportswomen of the year event, beating easily Marcon Bezzina, and third placed Sue Abela.
Another closely contested award was the team of the year with powerboat Chaudron Team edging the Malta Pool team by only 21 points. Sailing Artie Crew grabbed the third spot.
Two basketball officials topped the list of the official of the year contest, with referee Bernard Vassallo beating the President of the Malta Basketball Association, Magistrate Antonio Mizzi, by a large margin. Third place went to snooker international referee Terry Camilleri.
Tennis star Matthew Asciak won the under-17 athlete award, beating Diane Borg and Francesca Xuereb, both from the Athletics track events.

Maria Spiteri and Bjorn Tabone, two bowling athletes with special needs, were also presented with a commemorative plaque by the organisers.
