Parliamentary Secretary for Farming and Fisheries Francis Agius outlined Malta’s favourable position towards the proposals put forward by the European Commission for farmers and producers during an EU Agricultural Ministers Council meeting.

Dr Agius said that Malta agreed with the proposed reform in the market organisation of fruit and vegetables, especially where the stability of the farmers’ income is concerned.

He also pointed out that Malta agrees that producers’ associations should have a central role in this reform.

Dr Agius stressed the importance of keeping the price of cereals stable, especially with regard to market intervention in maize production, within the internal market of 27 member states.

He pointed out that the price balance helps the production sectors of milk and poultry remain competitive.

Dr Agius said this decision was an important step towards the cereal market corresponding to the needs of the market.
