The Office of the Prime Minister yesterday condemned and denied the false allegations made on Sunday by Opposition Leader Alfred Sant regarding the resignation of Dr Gordon Cordina from the post of Director General of the National Statistics Office.

In a press release issued last night, the OPM said that the MLP leader is aware that such a resignation letter is not sent to the government but to the Malta Statistics Authority, and therefore the government could have never tried to hide it.

The OPM added that the insinuation that Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi was in any way involved in Dr Cordina’s resignation is totally unfounded. The Prime Minister, like the authority board, considers Dr Cordina’s resignation as a loss to the country. The statement said that it was only the Opposition Leader and the MLP media’s “personal attacks” on Dr Cordina which led to his resignation.

It is clear that the Opposition Leader is trying to cover up the personal attacks levelled at Dr Cordina, which Dr Cordina said ultimately led to his resignation, the OPM statement concluded.
