The government does not seem to have any motivation in helping people with social and financial constraints in buying or renting property from the private sector, said MLP spokesmen Karl Chircop and Stefan Buontempo yesterday.

In a statement, they said that the government was leaving all in the hands of the private sector, something which it should not be doing and this because the government was not taking up the responsibility of helping people in the social sector.

They said that the much vaunted government initiative to buy out Lm3 million worth of property from the private sector to lift some of the burden never materialised and that no such contract had been signed.

Worse still, the government reviewed the estimates of this scheme and allocated some Lm2 million less, meaning that it was only going to spend Lm1 million on the project.

Dr Chircop and Dr Buontempo said that the government should enter into a private-partnership to help Maltese and Gozitan families to either buy or rent a property.
