The Gozo Tourism Association (GTA) is in favour of improved air access between Malta and Gozo but still believes that Gozo should have its own airstrip.

The association discussed the issue of the seaplane following recent reports in the media during its first council meeting.

“The idea of a seaplane will not resolve the access issue for a number of reasons,” the association said. There should be a link between the islands all year round and during the day and night, it added.

“Prevailing sea and weather conditions affecting the entrance of Mgarr Harbour, especially when North East, South East and South West winds are blowing, will not provide the ideal landing and take off conditions at sea for a seaplane.”

The GTA queried if the seaplane will be able to operate during night-time and stated that according to experts this is not possible.

The association also pointed out that the Mgarr port is already congested and that the seaplane will only add to the busy traffic.

Furthermore, it said, Gozo-bound tourists arriving at Malta International Airport will be constrained to take a tour of Malta by coach in order to board the seaplane from the Grand Harbour.

This will be as time consuming as taking a coach trip to Cirkewwa, added the association.

The GTA said that the seaplane will not be able to be as efficient, reliable and consistent if used.

The association asked why Gozo and its tourism industry are being deprived of the only sustainable, reliable, and consistent air link to Gozo – the airstrip.

The GTA called on all those who have the well-being of Gozo and tourism at heart to speak out in favour of the airstrip and to provide Gozo with the air access it deserves.
