Football – Bank Of Valletta Division II: Mellieha beat St Venera to remain at top of standings

Balzan Y-St.Andrews 0-0

The Saints continued to pick up important points in their efforts to maintain their Second Divison status in a match dominated by both sets of defences. Balzan Youths were the better team throughout the first-half but it was the Saints who created the opening opportunities through Patrick Briscoe White and Jonathan Briscoe White.

Balzan were denied by Tabone off a Beppe Pace free-kick and hit just wide through Simon Mizzi. On other occasions Balzan were again close through Antoine Sacco and Malcolm Tirchett.

In the 55th minute the Saints were denied by Bonello who blocked off a point-blank shot by John Zammit with Balzan replying through attempts by Malcolm Tirchett and Antoine Sacco which were well saved by Tabone.

Lija A-Gudja 3-0

Gudja United shared the exchanges during the first period but were completely outclassed by a superior Lija Athletic after the interval as they scored three goals to assure themselves of their sixth win of the season.

Lija dictated the run of play during the first half with Alan Ellul going close after six minutes.

In a Gudja counter-attack just before the interval Robert Micallef hit just wide following good work by Carlos Scicluna. Lija dominated the second part of the match with Alan Ellul giving them a deserved lead after only three minutes.

Gudja finished playing with ten players in the 68th minute following Jeffrey Farrugia's dismissal for a second yellow card.

Lija finished off their opponents with two further goals scored by Glen Barry and Beppe Antignolo in the 84th and 87th minute respectively for an emphatic 3-0 win for the Athletic.

B'Bugia SP-Dingli S 2-3

Dingli Swallows opened their second round commitments with an important win over B'Bugia St.Peter's in a difficult match. Dingli were the better team during the first half and after going close through Jeffrey Zammit they broke the deadlock with Jeremy Agius lobbing the ball over Fardell and Chris Ciappara headed in from close-range.

Then Jeffrey Zammit hit just wide from close range with B'Bugia replying through an Aldrin Muscat free-kick which just missed the target. On the half-hour Dingli made it 2-0 with Etienne Farrugia crossing from the right flank and Clive Formosa failed to clear the ball with Jeremy Agius hitting home from close-range.

In injury time B'Bugia reduced the arrears through a penalty given for a foul on James Galea and scored by Vince Camilleri. B'Bugia improved after the break but they suffered a third goal in the 68th minute as Dingli's striker Chris Ciappara beat Fardell with a cute lob.

B'Bugia were back in the game in the 81st minute as they scored through Stephen Borg and later on they were close to obtaining a dramatic equaliser.

Zebbug R.-Melita 0-1

A second half goal scored by Julian Galea was enough for Melita to start their second round commitments with an important win over Zebbug Rangers.

The first period was a balanced affair with the Melita custodian Sapiano bringing off a fine save to deny Aaron Buhagiar. At the other end Melita went close through Matthew Borg I and Jonathan Mifsud.

Melita were the better team after the interval and they managed to take the lead in the 55th minute through Julian Galea following a good move by Degabriele. It proved to be the winner.

Zebbug lost Joe Mallia in the 82nd minute as he was sent off following a second yellow card.

Rabat-Gozo 2-1

Rabat opened their second round commitments with an important win and are now sharing the third position in the league standings with Balzan Youths and Lija Athletic.

The Gozitans opened the score in the 18th minute through Charles Mercieca whose long range shot beat Jonathan Azzopardi.

Rabat were back on level terms in the 48th minute through Josef Tonna who beat Camilleri from close-range.

Rabat continued to push forward but it was the Gozitans who could have regained the lead in the 70th minute as Azzopardi saved off a John Camilleri low shot.

In the 81st minute Rabat's striker Adam Smeir wasted a sitter but five minutes from time Rabat got the all-important goal with Jonathan Bezzina finishing off from close-range after an Alan Zahra shot had been saved partially by Camilleri. In the 87th minute the Gozitan defender Brian Meilaq was sent off for a professional foul and in injury-time Rabat lost Josef Tonna who was also sent off for a double caution.

St.Venera L-Mellieha 1-3

Late goals by William Borg and Wayne Borg St.John earned Mellieha their eighth win of the season as they are once again sole leaders one point ahead of Dingli Swallows.

The first period was a balanced affair with Ibrahim Tarik giving Mellieha a second minute lead with a well taken direct free-kick. At the other end Vella denied St.Venera off a Mark Grech volley.

On 30 minutes the Mellieha keeper brought off a fine save to deny Dylan Mercieca but six minutes before the break they gained a penalty when Mellieha defender David Cauchi handled the ball and Clayton Garzia scored from the spot.

In the 52nd minute St.Venera's striker Dylan Mercieca was sent off for a second booking. Mellieha were denied by Rapinett off a shot by Tarik but on 76 minutes Mellieha regained the lead through William Borg.

Nine minutes from time St.Venera ended up with nine players when Mark Muscat was sent off for a second yellow card. A minute into injury time Wayne Borg St.John finished off a good move by Tarik to make it 3-1 for Mellieha.
