The Malta Labour Party annual general conference will be held at the party headquarters in Hamrun between today and Sunday.

The conference will be approving “the last foundations on which the party’s electoral manifesto will be drawn up,” the MLP said in a statement.

The conference will be discussing and approving five social plans covering the family, equality between the sexes, the elderly, youth and employment conditions.

Before these plans were drawn up, Labour MPs responsible for the different sectors had a number of preliminary and preparatory meetings with technical people within and outside the party.

Once the plans were drawn up, consultation meetings were held with the social partners, associations and institutions, while several submissions were made by a number of individuals. This led to a number of amendments to the final documents, the MLP added.

At the same time, the MLP was also involved in drawing up plans that deal with cooperatives, agriculture and fisheries, self-employed, the civil service, IT and local

councils.

The conference that will convene today is linked to another three conferences held in July 2005, and in January and July last year, during which several plans drawn up by the party were approved – economic and social policy, tourism, environment, industry, health, education and Gozo.

The conference will also be asked to appoint its 10 representatives on the national executive while a vote will be taken for the post of educational secretary. The conference will come to an end with a speech by Labour leader Alfred Sant.
