Local Rugby: Big guns clash today

Malta Independent Saturday, 3 February 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 21 years ago

Today will see Stompers TGI Fridays and Kavallieri Blue Label clash in what is expected to be a real showdown on the fifth and final day of the MRFU Cup – qualifying round. The two sides are already confirmed finalists for the final on Saturday 7th April and have met each other twice this season, with a victory going to each of them. As the two rivals face each other off in the cup this Saturday, only one of them will emerge victorious.

The holders Stompers know that Kavallieri are a strong side, and their coach Matthew Mirabelli said that the team has been training hard these last few weeks in preparation for the match. Kavallieri’s coaching staff Keith Hopkins and Pierre Azzopardi also said their team was working hard on shutting down the Stomper’s plays.

Both teams have had an excellent season so far, reaching the top two slots in the cup. Kavallieri had a few more ups and down on their journey, which started well with two wins on tour in Spain against second division teams.

But then losing to both Stompers in the Ray Elliott Super Cup Final and Overseas on the first day of the Cisk Lager Championship seemed to put the team in a rut. But they have bounced back from these setbacks and are now in fighting form ready to do battle with the experienced Stompers.

Both teams have some injury worries with Daniel Grima and hooker Ishmael Borg out for Kavallieri. Stompers also have Edward Willis injured and unable to play on Saturday.

The match official chosen for this fixture is Steven Busuttil.

The match, held at the Marsa Rugby pitch, starts at 2.45pm and is well worth watching as it is sure to be one of the hardest fought this season. In the other of the weekend games Alligators Cisk take on Hibernians Sharks starting at 1pm.
