A Taste of Labour leadership

Malta Independent Monday, 5 February 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

I would like to refer to San Gwann mayor Joe Borg’s letter (TMID, 31 January).

Mayor Borg’s reply took its time in coming round. It surprised me that most of its content is a personal attack on me, very much similar to present Labourite personal attacks on people who criticise. It is a very unhappy and disgraceful situation.

My article (TMID, 12 January) was based on personal findings, meetings with residents, both in the Kappara area and other streets in San Gwann. It has been supported by other photos seen in other newspapers on the state of certain San Gwann roads. Other residents asked me to forward email requests to the council.

The pointing of fingers to particular residents does not become the stature of a mayor.

Mayor Borg completely left out the facts of his council. As a mayor, and now as an MP, my obligations were and always will be towards the residents of the localities I represent.

I waited and wanted mayor Borg to come out in the open. Having done my homework, I ask him the following questions.

1. Triq Hida: was this pavement commissioned, done and paid by the council, under the PN mayor, that is before he even took office as mayor?

2. Was the G. M. Camilleri Garden given a facelift once a year?

3. Today, has maintenance work stopped in this so-called garden?

4. Does a garden normally have flowers and well-kept trees?

5. Is it true that last summer, so under mayor Borg, the garden was only watered once while the previous administration used up 10,000 litres of water per week? Was the non-watering exercise done to cut costs at the expense of these gardens?

6. Did mayor Borg ask the residents of Kappara how many times do they see a street sweeper, or gardener, or weed cutter in the area?

7. Were the signs in Kappara garden done by the previous PN administration?

8. Is it possible that Labourites do not give their children chocolate as stated by mayor Borg?

This is but a small example and taste of Labour leadership. No chocolates given, no colour TVs , limiting university students, toothpaste and a host of other restrictions, that made life miserable for all. Life is so different under a PN government.

I doubt very much that mayor Borg will actually arrive at the same results of the previous PN administration, when work in different streets was carried out, including better street lighting.

Having taken up the job of a mayor, the responsibilities still lie with him. A garden has to have flowers, and maybe he should come and see the Sliema garden and gain from this experience. His next contribution should include his programme of work for the benefit of all residents in his area. I remain at the service of all residents, including Joe Borg.
