For some time now, Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna has been receiving many requests from individual students asking for assistance with their school heritage projects. FWA is fully supportive of such projects, wherein individuals are asked by their teachers to prepare a project on a given aspect of our cultural heritage.

Through such projects, students will have the opportunity to focus on an area of Malta’s rich past, learning in the process about subjects and elements which are normally overseen in the class. It also compels students to visit their project subject, interact with curators, site managers and visitors and to observe and experience at first hand a given site. Initiatives of this sort are aimed at instilling a growing interest in heritage appreciation. Until now, FWA staff and volunteers have gone out of their way to assist these students, however the ever growing number has made it impossible to continue helping them in an efficient manner. FWA is therefore launching a new dedicated service that will ensure that these students continue to receive all the information that they require.

This service will be offered on weekends, thus fitting in with the students’ schedule. The sessions are approximately an hour long and are being offered on Saturdays and Sundays between 11.30am and 12.30pm at Fort Rinella in Kalkara. Throughout each session, students will be taken on a tour around the site by one of the resident guides dressed in period uniform. They will watch and also be encouraged to participate in the historical re-enactment displays, which are specifically designed to educate the students about the history, architecture and past use of the fort.

A free printed handout will also be provided which will include the basic history of the fort. A discount is also offered on the 64-page guide book of the fort which provides further details in both script and pictures on the same subject. Throughout the tour students will be encouraged to take their own photographs and notes. A small fee of Lm2.50 is charged for each session. Participants will also receive a year’s membership in FWA for free.
