Finland yesterday proved to be too superior to Mark Miller’s Malta side as they swept aside the feeble Maltese challenge to win handsomely 4-0.
Without setting any houses on fire, the Finns brought to the fore the several deficiencies in this Malta side which obviously missed cohesion, mostly due to the lack of matches in the past few months.
Moreover, the match started on a sad tone for Malta as goalkeeper Montfort fractured his nose during the warm-up after being hit accidentally by a shot from colleague Steve Bezzina. He is expected to remain out of action for the next two weeks.
Another bad incident was the injury to one of the most promising players in Maltese football, Steve Bezzina of Valletta, who was carried off injured near the end of the first half.
All in all it was a mediocre performance by the Malta side which was dominated by superior opponents.
For the record, Miki Sipilinen, Tim Sparv, Teemu Turunen and Eetu Muinonen scored for the visitors, who led 1-0 at the interval.
The Malta team lined up as follows: M. Falzon (H. Bonello), E. Herrera, C. Failla, J. Caruana, S. Bezzina (T. Farrugia), P. Fenech, M. Bartolo (R. Fenech), A. Agius, I. Zammit (A. Scerri), E. Agius, D. Falzon.
