I refer to the press release issued by the (Local Enforcement System) Zejtun Joint Committee in respect of its allegation that the “Petitions Board is manifestly discriminating against all citizens, as all citizens should be treated equally.”

This statement is manifestly incorrect and unjustified.

The Board of Petitions is not exercising any discrimination at all in carrying out its function, namely that of ensuring that a remedy be given to the members of the public who have been mistakenly or unjustly booked or who have sufficient reasons to warrant such a contravention to be waived.

With respect to the case in question and which apparently has urged the Zejtun Joint Committee to make its accusation, the facts are quite different from those indicated by the Zejtun Joint Committee.

However, it is not pertinent to disclose the merits of the case as this would be tantamount to a review of the decision of the board, the latter being a constituted body entrusted to decide petitions.
