Football – Bank Of Valletta Division III: Fgura obtain ninth win of season

George Faure’s team Fgura United obtained their ninth win of the season which means that they are leading the table, two points ahead of Sirens.

Kalkara were the better team during the first period with Fgura’s keeper Renald Attard bringing off difficult saves to foil Kevin Tonna and Joe Mizzi.

Fgura replied through Aldo Pace whose shot was well saved by Elvin Attard as Kalkara then went close again through Kevin Tonna.

Just before the interval Fgura wasted an easy opportunity as Matthew Spiteri shot straight at Elvin Attard when alone infront of goal.

Early on in the second-half Fgura missed an easy opportunity through Matthew Spiteri and then hit the post through Aldo Pace.

Fgura’s pressure paid off in the 65th minute through an excellent shot by Clint Ellul and in the 76th minute a volley by Matthew Spiteri was stopped by the crossbar.

Mdina-Luqa SA 1-4

Luqa St. Andrews dominated their match against Mdina Knights with the main protagonist being Luqa’s prolific scorer Alessadro Pirrone who scored three excellent goals.

Luqa attacked for long stretches throughout the first forty-five minutes with Alessadro Pirrone giving them a deserved lead on 17 minutes.

Luqa were again close through Mark Said but in the 32nd minute they increased their lead with Norbert Zammit crossing for Alessandro Pirrone to beat Cortis with an excellent first-time shot.

Mdina came back through attempts by Joe Debono which were well saved by Luqa’s custodian John Agius. A minute after the restart Alessandro Pirrone made it 3-0 for Luqa to notch his hat-trick with Mark Said further increasing Luqa’s lead in the 58th minute.

Mdina salvaged some of their pride in the 68th minute when they finally reduced the arrears through a strike by Ian Sammut. Late in the match Mdina were again close through James Vella.

Zejtun-St Lucia 2-2

Zejtun seemed heading towards their fourth win of the season but at the end of it all they had to settle for one point as Santa Lucia made an excellent recovery after the change of ends.

After 12 minutes Santa Lucia went close through Christian Curmi whose shot was saved by Mifsud. Zejtun then wasted an easy opportunity through Jean Paul Abela but they took the lead on 14 minutes through Godwin Mifsud following good work by Brian Grech.

Zejtun lost another opportunity through Mifsud with the Saints’ reaction producing attempts by Anthony Brignone and Chris Cutajar which were saved by Mifsud.

In added time the Corinthians increased their lead through a beautiful goal scored by veteran Marco Gerada.

Santa Lucia dominated the second half and early on, a Brignone goal was disallowed for an offside infringement. Then they hit the upright through Christian Curmi but in the 65th minute a shot by Melvin Agius bounced off the crossbar and Anthony Brignone scored from the rebound.

The Saints increased the pressure and in the 80th minute made it two-all through a Melvin Agius direct free-kick. Four minutes from time Zejtun had a Mario Farrugia shot cleared off the goal line by Robert Agius and in injury-time Zejtun ended up with ten players when Norbert Gerada was sent off for remarks passed to the official.

Gzira-Sirens 0-0

The St.Paul’s Bay team, Sirens, failed to recover from their defeat against Zurrieq when they had to settle for just one point from their match against Gzira United.

Sirens were the best team during the first period and early on they were close on two occasions through Adrian Galea and Juergen Mifsud.

Gzira replied through a Darren Caruana free-kick which was saved by Schembri and three minutes before the end of the first half Sirens were denied a certain goal by Omar Ablett following a strong header by Adrian Galea.

Ablett was again in action in the 51st minute when he blocked a point blank shot by Barbara and later on he again denied Sirens off a low shot by Adrian Galea.

Two minutes from time Gzira’s defender Mark Brincat was sent off for an ugly foul on a Sirens player.
