Malta Rugby Football Union Cup 2007 – Qualifying Rd (Day 5): First Win for Hibernians Sharks

Malta Independent Friday, 9 February 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Hibernians Sharks finally achieved their first win in their club's history by beating Alligators Cisk RFC.

Hibernians Sharks RFC was founded three years ago by a group of youngsters who wanted to play rugby together. Although Sharks suffered humiliating results, they never gave up and last Saturday they managed to obtain a famous victory.

In the first half of the match, Sharks started strongly and kept Alligators on the back foot. Although Sharks were dominant in the first part of the match, Alligators were not ready to give in.

In fact against the run of play, Alligators scored the first try of the match thanks to P. Harvey. The match continued to be an evenly balanced encounter and Sharks were playing their best match of the season.

Sharks' dominance in Alligators half was rewarded when N. Cauchi levelled matters for Sharks, whilst J. Crowford put Sharks in the lead by scoring the conversion.

Alligators seemed to find some form of inspiration after losing their lead, and after a good number of attacks, A forcing driving maul by Alligators, resulted in another try by Alligators scored by B. Sammut. R. Parnis England missed the conversion so Alligators finished the first half leading 10-7.

In the second half, both sides continued where they left off, playing an evenly contested match. But Sharks managed to take the lead when S. Ellul Sullivan scored a try by breaking through the center of Alligators defence.

Alligators, superbly led by R. Parnis England and D. Cutajar, tried to restore their lead but Sharks were not ready to throw the towel. J. Crowford scored Sharks third try and at the end of the match, emotions ran high in the Sharks players knowing that they are the first team to obtain a historic win for their club.

After the match, the two coaches commented on this historic game. Founding member John Micallef Moreno on behalf of the Sharks said that the whole team played fantastic rugby "Being the youngest team makes me even more proud. Today we started what will be a bright future for our club."

Alligators coach David Cutajar also commented by saying that it was a well deserved victory for Sharks, not just because it's the first in the clubs three year history but for their sheer determination.

Stompers 17

Kavallieri 14

Although both sides had already qualified for next April's final before this match, both sides wanted a win from this match, and it was no surprise that both sides offered a great rugby match watched by a sizeable crowd at Marsa.

Kavallieri started strongly and D. Borg scored Kavallieri's first try converted by R. Attard. Whilst Kavallieri were continuously using their forwards ably supported by their quick centers, Stompers were stretching Kavallieri to the limit.

P. Satariano was inflicting damage by using the whole field and change of directional play from one side to another, was disorienting Kavallieri's defense.

After an evenly balanced first quarter, Malta international M. Mirabelli managed to sneak through Kavallieri's tight defence whilst captain P. Satariano converted two important points for Stompers.

While Stompers displayed clear superiority when the ball was released to their backs, their forwards worked overtime to impose territorial advantage. Impeccable veteran L. Mifsud led Stompers forwards and he also managed to score Stompers second try, unconverted by P. Satariano.

In the second half both sides tried to wear each other and the crowd present sensed that this match will keep them on the tenterhooks till the last minute.

Stompers forwards continued to frustrate Kavallieri's forwards and C. Diamantino led his forwards in a rolling maul which resulted in a try scored by D. Cerketa.

Stompers thought they were home and dry but Kavallieri had other ideas. Kavallieri's lock D. Borg confirmed his positive performance by scoring his second personal try converted by R. Attard.

Borg's try encouraged Kavallieri players to pressure Stompers players in their own half. To make matters worse for Stompers, Mirabelli lost his temper and was sin binned for 10 minutes.

Kavallieri sensed that this was the right moment to put Stompers on the back foot but this was not enough from preventing Stompers, registering their second win over Kavallieri this season.

One curious note was that at the end of the match, Kavallieri were awarded a penalty and R. Attard was the right man to level matters for Kavallieri.

But the latter opted to choose other attacking options by trying to score the final try that never materialise.
