The government has welcomed the agreeement reached in Mecca on Thursday on the formation of a Palestinian National Unity Government.

In a statement, Foreign Minister Dr Michael Frendo said: “I welcome the Mecca agreement on the formation of a Palestinian National Unity Government. This should result in an immediate end to the internal violence and tensions of the past few weeks.

“I consider that this development can provide an impetus for a positive way forward.

“I look forward to discussing this important issue and the EU’s reaction with my colleagues at the GAERC next Monday.”
