Wirt Ghawdex inaugurated a newly-restored, century old ex-voto niche in Mgarr last Sunday, in the presence of Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono and Ghajnsielem mayor Frans Cauchi.
A few years ago the oil painting in the niche, depicting Our Lady, St Peter, St John and St Francis protecting two fishermen on a ferilla (small boat) in rough seas, was stolen.
Fortunately, Joe Caruana of Ghajnsielem had a colour photograph of the painting and made it possible for the society to produce a photographic replica to replace the missing painting.
The president of Wirt Ghawdex, Magistrate Paul Coppini, spoke about the importance of preserving similar niches that formed an important part of local culture. Ghajnsielem Archpriest Frankie Bajada concluded the ceremony by blessing the niche.
