Malta Independent Wednesday, 21 February 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Sirens notched their ninth win of the season after easily beating Ta’ Xbiex scoring no less than nine goals in the process.

Ta’ Xbiex started the match with ten players but eventually the missing player found his way onto the pitch.

Sirens opened a two-goal lead in the opening 15 minutes through Ryan Theuma and Adrian Galea and on 21 minutes Ryan Theuma added a third goal as he scored from the rebound after Galea’s effort had been stopped by the post.

In the 40th minute Kenneth Zammit added a fourth goal for Sirens. In the 49th minute Patrick Barbara made it 5-0 with Adrian Galea heading in a sixth goal in the 57th minute.

Then Ryan Theuma (61st minute) and Adrian Galea (64th minute) added two further goals as each of these players secured a hat-trick. Three minutes from time Sirens scored a ninth goal through Adrian Galea.

Santa Lucia-Mdina Ks 0-0

Mdina Knights were held to a goalless draw by a determined Saints’ side who had to defend for long stretches against the Knights’ continuous pressure throughout the ninety minutes.

After only nine minutes Mdina were denied by Brincat off a Joe Debono corner-kick and two minutes later an Ian Sammut shot just missed the target. On 29 minutes they were again close through Matthew Francalanza and five minutes before the break James Vella having a close-range which went inches wide of the far post.

In the 64th minute the Saints’ custodian Brincat saved off a point blank effort by Francalanza and on another occasion Clint Caruana hit wide when alone infront of goal. A minute from time Mdina’s veteran goalkeeper Cortis brought off a fine save to deny Saints’ substitute Cristian Curmi.

Zejtun C-Gzira U 1-2

This was a balanced match decided by a William Mallia second-half goal. The first period proved to be a balanced affair with Gzira being unlucky early on as a direct free-kick by veteran Marco Gerada hit the base of the upright.

Gzira took the lead in the 30th minute through Nico Corito but Zejtun were deservedly back on level terms in the 43rd minute through an opportunistic goal scored by Godwin Mifsud.

After the change of ends Zejtun created two good opportunities through Marco Gerada with Gzira coming back through Corito’s shot which was saved by Mifsud. On 76 minutes Gzira regained the lead through a low shot by William Mallia following good work by Josef Vidal and late in the match Gzira were again close through Corito.

Zurrieq-Qrendi 0-0

This is a fair result in a balanced match between neighbours Zurrieq and Qrendi, two teams who are this year challenging for promotion honours.

Early on in the match, Zurrieq created the better opportunities through Jason Saliba and Daniel zammit.

Gradually Qrendi gained the initiative, twice going close through Kevin Naudi and on another occasion an attempt by Vella Petroni hit the crossbar.

In the 28th minute Qrendi gained a free-kick which was taken by Tano Farrugia with Azzopardi bringing off a fine save and at the other end Zurrieq went close through Jason Saliba.

Zurrieq dictated the run of play after the break and they were twice close through Michael Abdilla and Joe Bugeja. At the other end Qrendi were twice denied by Azzopardi off attempts by Tano Farrugia and Kurt Grima.
