The Malta Sport Council has started constructing the second regional sport complex since the Sport Law was enacted. It is being built in Kirkop close to the new secondary school, Education Minister Louis Galea said yesterday.

The work has been entrusted to the Foundation for Tomorrow’s Schools on behalf of the council. The complex will incorporate a six-lane 200-metre track for athletics and a nine-a-side football pitch, which have already been built as part of the St Benedict College.

Several sport disciplines will be able to be practised at the complex, including basketball, volleyball, netball and badminton, apart from football and athletics. The complex will also have a gymnasium, a multi-purpose hall and administrative offices.

The complex – the first phase of which is expected to be completed in six months – will be used by students during school hours and by the public at all other times. The investment should be enjoyed by as many people as possible, Dr Galea said. A similar complex is to be built in St Paul’s Bay, while a first has been constructed in Cottonera.

The complex in Kirkop is being built on an area of 5,000 square metres, which includes landscaping and a parking area. A reservoir capable of containing 150,000 gallons of water will be built underneath.
