Mosta mayor Joe DeMartino rebutted comments made by Opposition Leader Alfred Sant during a visit in Mosta on Wednesday.

In a statement, Mr DeMartino said the Mosta local council held a series of meetings with the residents of the housing estate in the Ta’ Mlit area. Following a number of discussions, several changes were made to the original plans.

During his visit, Dr Sant had said that works on roads in the Ta’ Mlit area, which was promised in 2004, started only a few months ago and were not completed. Dr Sant also said that since the work was announced, the designs had been changed a number of times.

He had also pointed out that although work was supposed to have been carried out on all the roads in the area, a few had been left out of the current plans.

Mr DeMartino said that the council held a number of meetings with the service corporations responsible and that the works are following the established procedures.

He pointed out that works are not behind schedule and the residents are satisfied with the work carried out so far.

Furthermore, he said, the Mosta local council had always specified that the project included all the roads around the government apartments.

“It is not true that the council promised to include all the roads in the Ta’ Mlit area. The allocated sum is being spent according to the agreement made with the Housing Authority,” said Mr DeMartino.

The Mosta mayor also pointed out that the works are taking place at a fast pace because they are being carried out by two contractors.

Apart from this project, the Mosta local council worked on another project with the government where 30 new roads were built in two years and nine months.
