Water Leaks

Malta Independent Saturday, 24 February 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Now I know perfectly well what Stephen Zerafa, Water Services Corporation PRO (TMID, 8 February) thinks of those public-spirited citizens who try to cooperate with the same corporation of which he is the head of public relations. But I want these comments to be written in black on white for future reference.

I have one of the many garages in Ruzar Mizzi Street, Mosta. This street is nothing more than a stony path which some people use only as a short cut. There are several garages and a handful of residents.

Some three years ago the metal water pipes were replaced by plastic ones and leaks began to appear with monotonous regularity. Personally I reported so many leaks that someone who identified himself as a senior officer in the water works department called me and gave me his mobile telephone number, which is still recorded on my mobile telephone, and invited me to contact him personally if the need arises.

Once I even sent them a sketch to show them were the leaks (plural) were. Some three months ago three government employees with several papers in their hands paid a visit to this street. I was there together with another garage owner. One of the employees, probably a foreman, asked us about the drainage in this street and the water mains.

When we told him that the water system was certainly defective he assured us that the pipes were only temporary and that new ones will be laid before any other work will be undertaken. Work on the street has started and is well underway, but the water system has not been replaced. Leaks can still be seen in more than one place and if the surface of tarmac is laid it will certainly be dug up again in a matter of months.
