Malta Independent Sunday, 25 February 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

The Netball League progressed with another three matches, one from the first division and two from the second division. Kerygma Strikers, Fuego and Kerygma Kaizers all emerged winners from their encounters.

New Ages Wildcats 8 Kerygma Strikers 54

The first match on the day’s fixtures was from the second division and as the final score indicates, it turned out to be a one-way traffic affair.

In fact Kerygma Strikers immediately took command of the game and by the end of the first quarter they were leading 13 - 4.

New Ages Wildcats’ efforts to offer stronger opposition proved futile as their opponents continued to dominate and further stretched the gap in score by 19 shots half-way through the match.

The two subsequent quarters produced the same performance by both teams. Kerygma Strikers continued to dictate matters and incessantly increasing their credit whilst New Ages Wildcats struggled unsuccessfully with their feat at hand.

Although deservedly Kerygma Strikers took home their 5 points, New Ages Wildcats still merited a better end result for their brave performance.

Fuego 38 Ta' Xbiex ASC 18

This encounter from the first division had a quite balanced first quarter with Fuego taking their time to settle down permitting Ta’ Xbiex ASC to successfully start in a competitive style. In fact the score by the end of this fraction was still close, that of 8 - 5 to Fuego.

In the second quarter, Fuego returned with a more determined display to totally regain control of the game. They indeed showed more accurate shooting and good defending, to score 15 shots to only 3 by Ta’ Xbiex ASC.

Ta’ Xbiex ASC were not discouraged by their opponents' superiority and their determination to restrain Fuego's solid play paid off with a good third quarter. They in fact managed to net 6 shots to 8 by Fuego.

With a comfortable lead of 31-12, Fuego showed no intention of stepping up their game and this approach permitted Ta’ Xbiex ASC to once again perform better losing this quarter by only 1 shot.

Unfortunately Ta’ Xbiex ASC were penalised for their lack of consistency in the first half of the match as in the end they failed to take at least one point from this encounter. On the other hand Fuego recorded another victory ending their first round commitments undefeated.

Kerygma Kaizers 24 United 22

The last encounter was from the second division and it turned out to be the most exciting match of the day. United gave a fine performance making Kerygma Kaizers work really hard to earn their victory.

In fact it was United who had the better start when they produced better co-ordinated play as well as more accurate shooting. This seemed to disorient Kerygma Kaizers as they failed to produce fluent play and shots. This course of action ended the first quarter with the result of 8 - 3 to United.

In the second quarter, Kerygma Kaizers improved their performance and by winning this fraction by one shot they managed to reduce the gap in score to only 4 shots.

In the third quarter United started losing their composure and this seemed to have encouraged Kerygma Kaizers who gradually worked their way to leveling the score 18 - 18 by the end of this fraction.

The last quarter provided the most excitement as both teams came back on court determined to intensify their final efforts. It was however Kerygma Kaizers who shrugged off United’s pressure managing to take the lead in this important final stage of the match. United’s efforts to regain their footing proved futile as Kerygma Kaizers held their nerve till the end to emerge winners from this thrilling encounter. United could only contend with a one-point consolation and a good show.
