History Of Public Works Department published

Malta Independent Monday, 26 February 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

The Works Division has published a book, "Overview of the History and Development of the Public Works Department in the Maltese Islands", by Architect Joseph Degaetano.

The book traces the origins of the Public Works Department under the Hospitaller Knights, dating back to the 15th century. It also covers more recent periods, such as the British era, between 1800-1964 and the post Independence years. As pointed out by the author, the book is mainly an outline study of a vast history spanning over five centuries and architect Degaetano, in his introduction to the book, encourages others to do more research into the subject.

The first copies of the book were presented recently by Resources and Infrastructure Minister Ninu Zammit to architect S. Mangion, the longest serving Director of the Public Works Department, at his private residence in Sliema. The presentation ceremony was attended by the author, Anthony Mifsud, Permanent Secretary and architect R. Farrugia, Director General Works.

Copies of the book are on sale at the DOI Sales Office, 3, Castille Place, Valletta, at Lm5.
