Although he released his debut album last summer, Paolo Nutini’s popularity has been consistently on the increase, extending further beyond his native Scotland than he might ever have thought possible. Barely in his twenties, this fresh-faced singer/songwriter employs a very mature approach in both content and interpretation - a balance that makes his music alluring without being overwhelming. The result is a welcome treat that has earned him considerable critical and commercial acclaim, not to mention the odd comparison to like-minded peers such as Damien Rice.

In all fairness, all the praise is well-deserved. There is not one bad tune on this record, and when he is at his best - such as on the incredibly soulful title track or White Lies - Nutini is hugely reminiscent of the troubadours of yesteryear. His breakthrough single Last Request and the more recent hit Rewind, on the other hand, reveal a more affluent side to the artist’s profile – one that has helped him make significant inroads on the pop scene without losing sight of his stripped-down musical essence. With his backing band in tow, Nutini proffers a stronger rock vein by way of a bluesy groove (opening track Jenny Don’t Be Hasty, which is allegedly inspired by Nutini’s romantic adventures) and some breezy upbeat rhythms (New Shoes). Underneath the various musical styles, however, the message is clearly that this kid may be new in town, but he’s not just passing through!
