It was reported in the press last weekend that the government has distributed Lm400,000 to 32 sport organisations. It was good news, indeed!
However, what about other cultural organisations, which are also rendering healthy services to the people of these islands?
The Maltese Poets Association one day was promised financial aid by a high official in the Education Division. However, up to now, that assistance has not materialised!
We are a voluntary association. Our sole income comes from membership fees. Still we try to organise activities in the field of poetry as regularly as possible. Reports in the press attest to this. Sending a circular to our members costs us about Lm7 in postage costs alone.
To mention one instance, the last Children’s Poetry Competition cost us about Lm100 as children paid no entrance fee and more than 600 children participated.
Therefore, would it not be fair to say that we merit a modicum of financial aid, just as much as each of those 32 organisations does? It may be a drop in an ocean, but to our association it would mean a lot.
