Attard-Mgarr 0-2

Joe Grech’s team, Mgarr United, gained their ninth win of the season after beating Attard through two second-half goals scored by Steve Aquilina and Malcolm Bugeja. Mgarr are still unbeaten.

Attard proved to be dangerous through swift counter-attacks during the first-half but during the second part of the match Mgarr gained the initiative.

They were twice denied by Formosa off free-kicks well taken by Daniel Schembri and Neil Busuttil but they managed to break the deadlock in the 65th minute through Steve Aquilina.

Attard failed to react and it was once again Mgarr who managed to increase their lead in the 89th minute through Malcolm Bugeja who beat Formosa from yet another free-kick.

Gharghur-Xghajra 0-1

A late goal scored by Jonathan Cachia was enough for Xghajra Tornadoes to beat Gharghur, the latter suffering a severe setback in their hopes to qualify for the Promotion play-offs.

Gharghur lost a glaring opportunity through Ludvic Bartolo in the eighth minute and then Lawrence Vella hit just wide from a good position.

Xghajra were then denied by Brian Zammit who saved off efforts by Jonathan Cachia and Jovil Abela with Gharghur responding in the 55th minute through David Galea’s free-kick which was well saved by Keith Galea.

The match continued to be balanced and when te match seemed set to finish in a goalless draw, in te 85th minute Xghajra’s striker Jonathan Cachia pounced on a glaring mistake by the Gharghur keeper to hit in the winning goal for the Tornadoes.

Ghaxaq-Kirkop 1-1

This was a balanced match which could have gone either way but the final result was a fair one. Ghaxaq had a good start and on seven minutes Bjorn Dalli finished off a good move by Cristiano to put his team 1-0 ahead.

In the 13th minute Dalli scored another goal but he was in an irregular position and the goal was rightly annulled.

Kirkop responded through attempts by Busuttil and Debattista and on 33 minutes their captain Mark Farrugia hit wide with an open goal. On 38 minutes Ghaxaq scored through Maurice Muscat who was however in an offside position and the goal was disallowed by referee Debattista.

A minute after the restart Kirkop wasted a clear opportunity through Charlo Debattista with Ghaxaq having a shot by Cristiano which was cleared off the goal line.

Then two attempts by Dalli were saved by Formosa but on 70 minutes Kirkop made it one-all through Daniel Scicluna. A minute from time Ghaxaq were denied by Formosa off a shot by Cristiano.

Siggiewi-Fgura 1-2

Fgura United are once again sole leaders after they managed to obtain the three points from their match against Siggiewi.

After seven minutes Daniel Said went close for Fgura but on 13 minutes Clint Ellul gave Fgura the lead as he scored his 11th goal of the season. Siggiewi responded through efforts by Josef Micallef and Josef Vassallo but in the 34th minute Jason Mifsud made it 2-0 for Fgura from a penalty given for a foul on Josef Borg.

Three minutes before the break Siggiewi’s captain Josef Micallef was sent off for a second caution. Siggiewi gained the initiative after the break and they scored after just two minutes through Pierre Spiteri.

Then they were twice denied by the Fgura custodian off attempts by Pierre Spiteri and Mario Borg. In the 75th minute Fgura’s defender Jason Mifsud was shown the red card by referee Zammit.

Pembroke Luqa 1-0

Pembroke ended Luqa’s promotion hopes when they defeated them through a late Carlo Leonardi goal.

Luqa gained the initiative during the first-half and after eight minutes Norbert Zammit hit just wide following a personal effort. Then a shot by Mark Said was well saved by Debattista.

Pembroke gradually shared the exchanges with attempts by Jeffrey Fenech and Robert Zammit bejng saved by Agius with Luqa again going close in the 40th minute through Mark Said.

Pembroke were the better team after the change of ends with efforts by Carlo Leonardi and Clint Hili just missing the target but they did manage to break the deadlock in the 87th minute through Carlo Leonardi. T

Three minutes into injury-time Pembroke’s substitute Simon Buhagiar was booked for a second time and was sent off.

Kalkara-St Lucia 1-3

St Lucia played their best match of the season as they managed to beat Kalkara through first-half goals scored by Jesmond Schembri and Anthony Brignone and a third goal scored by Christian Curmi after the break.

In the opening 15 minutes Kalkara were twice denied by Brincat off attempts by Anton Cassar and Chris Borg. Gradually Santa Lucia gained the upper hand and deservedly broke the deadlock through a close-range shot by Jesmond Schembri in the 21st minute. Four minutes later Kalkara’s keeper Elvin Attard brought off a fine save to deny Anthony Brignone but the same player increased the Saints’ lead on 31 minutes. Kalkara gained the initiative after the break and on two occasions were denied off efforts by Chris Borg and Stephen Calleja.

However it was the Saints who managed to further increase their lead in the 75th minute through substitute Christian Curmi.

In the final five minutes Kalkara reduced the arrears through Karl Vassallo and had Clint Schiavone sent off for passing unwarranted remarks.
