Waterpolo Coaches course

Thirty-two prospective Waterpolo coaches are attending the Waterpolo coaches course which is being organised by the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta.

The majority of the coaches have also just successfully attended the Foundation Course in Coaching organised by the Institute for P.E. & Sport of the University of Malta.

The course, which is being held at the University Residence at Lija during this wekend, is being funded by Kunsill Malti ghall-Isport and Wilkinson Sword, main sponsors for Waterpolo in Malta.

Mr Marco Birri, an Italian Waterpolo Instructor, is conducting this course which deals withvarious topics such as movement theory, fundamental techniques (with and without the ball) tactics, and the Methodological Aspects of training.

Successful participants will be issued with a ‘B’ class Waterpolo Coaching Licence, which will enable them to assist teams participating in Waterpolo competition, organised by and under the auspices of the ASA.

New sponsors for MFA swimming pool

An agreement between the MFA Swimminmg Pool Management at the Millenium Stand Ta Qali and Actavis Ltd was recently reached, whereby the MFA Pool would benefit from the installation of fitted equipment as also other swimming equipment provided by Actavis Ltd which is a subsidiary of Actavis Group, a multinational pharmaceutical organization employing 10,000 people in 32 countries worldwide. The Maltese operation alone boasts of a workforce of no less than 380 highly skilled employees.

In the interest of the sport concerned the following equipment was installed: a set of protective nets as well as goalpost nets; a place clock; a set of stainless steel cable lane ropes; small and medium waterpolo balls ; kickboards and other floats. All this makes the MFA Swimming Pool the only indoor pool where waterpolo games can take place.

In fact all through the months of December and January waterpolo training featured regularly involving the ASA Junior National Team, Sirens ASC; San Giljan ASC and Sliema Juniors. Friendly practice matches also took place between these clubs.

More activity includes a waterpolo school for the very young, in conjunction with Kavallette Waterpolo School; swimming training for all the local swimming clubs plus the ASA National Swimming Team; the St Joseph Triathlon Team; masters swimming and the MFA Swimming School every Friday and Saturday.

The Pool management is aiming for further activity involving schools especially the preparation of students for the SEC PE ‘O’ Level Exam. Actavis Ltd prides itself with taking a leading role in such worthwhile ventures.
