The fact that visitors seek the quaint rural village of Hal Safi as a haven of tranquillity is in part attributable to the efforts of past local councils to keep it clean and upgrade its infrastructure. Nevertheless, its lack of social cohesion is a matter of grave concern, wholly overlooked by the local council. Too many residents, young and old alike, are made to feel excluded, marginalised and alienated from social, cultural and sporting initiatives, around which the local council ought to dynamically serve as an inclusive hub or common reference point.

Moreover, residents increasingly resent the number of vacant dwellings in the village core, left to fall into rack and ruin and, coupled with the phenomenon of speculation by stealth and the proliferation of multi-storey edifices, eroding the integrity of Safi’s architectural patrimony and its pristine pastoral character.

Bound and constrained as they are by the rigid diktats of their political hierarchies, MLP/PN party candidates are inevitably compromised, powerless to always act first and foremost in Safi’s best interests. A rational, reasoned local management model, unhindered by partisan pique, fear or favour, is urgently needed. An option is now on offer from a candidate representing an altogether different political ethos: that of Alternattiva Demokratika.
