The second Malta Squash open tournament of the season was held on Saturday 24th February at the Malta Union Club. These tournaments are becoming increasingly popular and it is very encouraging to notice that there are new players taking part every time.
As usual there was an ‘A’ event for experienced players and a ‘B’ event for those less so and for beginners.
On his way to meeting Mark Lupi in the final of the ‘A’ event, Ivan Balzan beat Anthony Schembri, Nigel Dunkerley and Roberta Pace Grima.
He was stopped in his tracks by Mark Lupi who showed that he has still got what it takes to be classed with the top players in Malta.
This is not to say that the final was a one sided match and Mark had to really dig deep when he was faced with some excellent shots from his opponent.
The final of the ‘B’ event saw two players relatively new to squash but who are improving at a remarkable pace. In the second round, Carl Camilleri, beat Mark Seychell, who will soon be playing in his first International Tournament in Vienna. He then beat Mark Wright and finished against Robert Sultana who himself saw off his three opponents with relative ease.
Once again the final was a fiercely fought match, with Robert winning it and proving that he will have to move to the ‘A’ event in the next tournament.
Malta Squash would like to thank the Malta Union Club for allowing us to use their courts, Ivan Balzan for organizing the tournament and last but not least all the players who took part.
We would like to remind everyone that the next open tournament is going to be held on Saturday 24th March at Cynergi by Reebok. More details are available on www.maltasquash.com.
