Still A utopia

Malta Independent Tuesday, 6 March 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

The Social Action Movement (MAS) said for the occasion of Woman’s Day, that women in Malta were working within the home as wives, mothers, carers of the elderly, in voluntary organisations as well as outside the home in gainful employment. The roles women play were various and important to the development of Maltese society.

Women themselves have to believe in gender equality. At present women are still housewives, the prime carers of children and the elderly while having to deal with the reality of work outside the home.

This was not equality, neither was it freedom to choose, the MAS said. This situation will remain as is until attitudes change and proper support services are in place to enable women to fulfil their potential in various sectors of society.
