Birkirkara Seeking successor of Stephen Azzopardi

Birkirkara FC are seeking a new coach and have made a shortlist of available names as they seek to re-stabilise the club after the recent upheavals.

On Friday, Stephen Azzopardi resigned as coach after he disagreed with a club proposal to have former Floriana coach Jan Artz of the Netherlands as a co-coach.

Club chairman Victor Zammit said yesterday the team trained under the charge of the head coach of the club’s nursery. “We have made a shortlist to select Stephen Azzopardi’s successor and we hope to be able to make an announcement soon,” he said yesterday evening.

Zammit also said that yesterday’s report over Jan Artz being sent back home was incorrect. “In fact, we did not send Artz. He had some business to attend to yesterday and made it clear to us that he had to be back in the Netherlands on Sunday and then come back. That is the position so far. The only problem is that we cannot appoint him as club coach as he has no A licence. We still want him to work alongside our new coach, if the selected one says he needs his collaboration,” said Zammit.
