‘Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna’ – An appeal for help

Malta Independent Thursday, 8 March 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

On the night of 3 to 4 March, while a good part of the population was enthralled with the unique celestial spectacle of the eclipse of the moon, some unscrupulous persons were busy forcing their way into the head office of Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna – The Malta Heritage Trust – at Notre Dame Gate, Vittoriosa.

The perpetrators of this despicable deed made away with a paltry sum of money that represented donations left in a collection box by the occasional visitors to the historic gate which is not as yet open to the public. The burglars also made away with a Canon digital projector that is normally used to illustrate informative talks delivered to school children during their visits to our heritage sites. This projector is also extensively used during public days at our sites and in the delivery of talks and presentations organized by FWA. This was the only projector we had and until such time as we can manage to get a replacement we will find ourselves hampered in delivering to good effect our educational material. In rummaging the place for money, the criminals also thrashed the place up breaking doors and furnishings causing nothing less than Lm2,500 in damage.

Through this letter, I wish to make it clear that Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna does not keep any funds at its office or heritage sites. As a charity it hardly ever has enough money at all to fulfil its heritage preservation and management obligations. I also take the opportunity to thank the hundreds of individuals whether FWA members, colleagues or friends who have expressed their sympathy and assistance on hearing of the despicable act.

Much effort, funds, and untold volunteer hours had gone into restoring Notre Dame Gate to what it is today. Yet, thanks to the unsocial behaviour of a handful of rascals, a good part of this work was destroyed in a senseless ransack.

This has been a slap on the face to the FWA’s work, nevertheless we intend to move ahead and continue fulfilling our mission undaunted. FWA will not be made to cower by the senseless acts of villains. FWA is currently raising funds to make good the said damage and to replace the stolen projector. We appeal to the goodwill of all to stand by us in this time of need. Donations towards this aim will be welcomed. Direct donations can be made to the FWA bank accounts – BOV 40011488956, HSBC 033160888009 – or mailed to The Secretary, Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna, Notre Dame Gate, St Edward’s Street, Vittoriosa.

Every penny will help put us back into action – Thank you.
