Malta Independent Friday, 9 March 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

There was more good news from Melita Cable for its Sports Channel subscribers after the announcement that it had acquired more exclusive sports rights.

During a press briefing held yesterday at ‘Portside Lounge’, one of Malta’s prime sports bars, Melita Cable Sales and Marketing manager Franco Degabriele announced that Melita has secured the rights of the Barclays English Premier League for another three seasons.

Through these rights, Melita will continue to provide extensive coverage of the English Premiership with ten live and exclusive games broadcast per week as well as the preview and highlights show. Melita has been offering this service without interruption since 1993, as one of only three operators worldwide. The other two are from Hong Kong and Holland.

To enhance the service to its subscribers, Melita Cable will be integrating transmissions on the internet, besides providing fans of English football with ‘golden moments’ special archive footage provided by the FA Premier League.

According to Mr Degabriele, the acquisition of Juventus Channel continues to add value to a rich line up of football channels on Melita Sports that includes also Roma Channel, AC Milan and Inter Channels of Italian football clubs as well as two football channels of English Premier League clubs, namely MUTV and Chelsea TV.

The Juventus Channel is a thematic channel dedicated entirely to Juventus, providing a minute by minute coverage of the story of the ‘Vecchia Signora’. It was only launched in Italy last November.

Broadcasts, which started in Malta from yesterday, will be 24 hours per day on Channel 704, substituted only when Melita broadcasts live sports events.

Amongst other things the channel will provide fans of this glorious club direct transmissions before and after all official games and interviews with coaches, players and members of management. During the week, the channel will provide footage from Turin training grounds and live coverage of the Under 18 fixtures.

The Roma Channel has now moved to Channel 703, while the ESPN Italian Classic is broadcast on Channel 204.

During the same press briefing the company also announced that it acquired the exclusive rights for the UEFA Cup for three seasons, starting from 2006/2007. These rights enable Melita Sports to broadcast on a live and exclusive basis all the games of the UEFA Cup from the quarter finals onwards. The first transmissions are scheduled for 22 March, 2007.

Moreover, the season opener in European football, the UEFA Super Cup will also be shown live and exclusively by Melita Sports starting from the next edition.

Through the acquisition of these rights, Melita Cable has confirmed its leadership in providing football fans with the very best in European football.

The subscription price of Melita Sports will remain unchanged at Lm7.50 per month.
