Mr J.M. Briffa (TMID, 2 March) urges us not to be negative and write in favour of such issues such as divorce and euthanasia.

I would like to assure Mr Briffa that we would not do so, if we lived in an ideal world. But as long as there are people who would like to remarry, years after their first marriage has broken down, but are not allowed to do so, then we will continue to express our concern.

And as long as there are people who are terminally ill, are going through unbearable suffering, and are crying out for someone to help them die with more dignity and less pain, then we will continue to express our solidarity.

Of course, many can bypass the lack of divorce legislation by cohabiting. After all, they have no choice. But for some of us, there will be no bypassing of pain and suffering as we wait for the inevitable.

Many of those who are against euthanasia often try to confuse the issue by lumping it with abortion, and even then conveniently forget to make a distinction between voluntary and involuntary euthanasia.

But should we expect any better from them? After all, the values of truth and compassion may not be that important to them. Perhaps what’s really important to them is imposing their religious beliefs on others.
