Winners and runners-up of various tournaments organised by VLTC were presented with trophies during a social event held at the club recently. The presentations related to the Samsung Rennie Tonna Team tournament, Lotto Team tournament and the John West Mixed Doubles tournament which were all held earlier on.
Samsung Rennie Tonna team tournament
This competition is one of the most popular amongst club members and is sponsored by Samsung, this time to commemorate the tenth anniversary since the demise of Rennie Tonna, an ex-committee member of VLTC.
A total of 72 men and 52 women participated in this tournament. Teams played against each other twice on a round robin system. The top placed 4 teams proceeded to play the semi-finals with Suniel Balani’s team D beating Team B captained by Rinaldo D’Alessandro and Team C captained by Joe Randich beating Clint Cassar’s Team E.
The final was won by Suniel Balani’s team after a tense and evenly contested encounter.
Lotto Team tournament
The Lotto Team Tournament was played on a 15-game, round robin basis. In the semi-finals the team captained by Clint Cassar beat Clayton Zammit’s team whilst the team captained by Suniel Balani eliminated that of Joseph Randich.
The final was played on the Orienta court in front of a sizeable crowd which assisted to some fine play. Despite stiff opposition from Clint Cassar’s team, Suniel Balani’s team won the tournament.
The event was sponsored by the Lotto sports firm through its representative in Malta, Mr Gordon Asciak.
John West Mixed doubles tournament
The John West Mixed Doubles event attracted 33 couples which were divided into 6 divisions. The first division was won by Suniel Balani and Alexia Carabott.
In Division 2, Raymond Agius and Angela Portelli emerged winners whilst Division 3 was won by the duo Joshua Zammit and Loren Falzon. The winners of Divisions 4 were Vince Vassallo and Anna Micallef and the winners of Division 5 were Mario Gauci and his wife Mary Anne. Jason Piscopo and his wife Christine won Division 6.
Crown Cold Stores Ltd., representatives in Malta of John West Foods sponsored the tournament.
