To witness the Attorney General actually appealing, as reported in the media last Saturday, a judgement in which 31 women were recently cleared of controversial charges in connection with lap dancing is actually just another sign that our very creaky system of law and order is cranky, is not reading the signs of the times, or more precisely the lapses of justice which are quite simply disgusting the thinking educated public.
Week after week sexual abusers in this country are let off with all manner of suspended sentences. Only a tiny minority of them ever get to our courts anyway. When they do their identity is protected, so we do not know if we live near them, if they teach our kids at school, if they give religious doctrine lessons.
What message does that send to parents of children who are abused and to the children themselves? Don’t report anything, that's what, because as the victims you will feel you are on trial and not the abuser.
Why isn't the AG and, more importantly, the political authorities, prodding the courts to review, rescind and otherwise redo these ridiculous judgments as far as sexual abuse, especially on children, is concerned? Why are we so concerned with Russian dancers? Are they really the Eves of this country? What about the Adams? Would these Russian dancers posing as actresses, models or whatever, but very often refugees of a sort looking for a better life including sometimes a Maltese husband and kids, be here without the trade Maltese men are exploiting in them. It's the men, the Adams, who often bring them here anyway.
To also have one of these Russian women (although we do not know if she too was a dancer?) brutally murdered and washed up on the shores of Sliema on Woman's Day no less was just a sure indicator that we would be better off celebrating Eve's Day than Woman's Day in this country.
Emancipation of women is not just about the numbers of women in paid employment, the EU targets for our lives which are written by people with all the comforts plus, plus in the world. It’s just as much and more about getting rid of the Eve syndrome which is drummed into us from and early age, whether we are Maltese women or Russian women for that matter.
This is a country where women are stupid, in one sense at least. They are always battling each other. How many men I know sigh wearily and tell me how they can't understand the endless bitching and infighting that goes on between many Maltese women. In a country with a Catholic Arab culture like ours women are easily replaceable by younger models. Girls who are sweet are the most admired. Do we admire sweet men in quite the same way? I don't think so. For sweet, in most cases, read dumb, unquestioning and compliant.
Maltese men are turning to Russians, whether to simply watch them dance, whether to bed them when their wives turn away from them at night, or sometimes even as partners because their attitude to their men is more similar to their mother’s. There is a willingness to indulge, to pacify, to be the wife in every old fashioned sense of the word.
Now before I get a load of emails about this there are obviously a minority of educated thinking Russian women who have nothing to do with my description (including of the term Russian), but they are a minority and there is no point in getting upset about remarks that do not pertain to you or your very educated and I am sure lovely in every sense Russian wife or partner.
If we in Malta are serious about morality let us start by nailing the thousands of men who physically and mentally bully their wives (and sometimes the other way round). Let us come down very hard on paedophilia. Let us be very, very worried about the internet and the easily accessible sex and access to sexual predators. If necessary, close these clubs which are floating between a bad world and a harmless one and set up licensed brothels where Maltese wives and girlfriends can at least be sure their errant husbands are using a condom.
Let's not criminalise some peroxide blonde dancers or whatever. Let’s not waste police time and time in our courts treating the symptom and not the cause. Let us protect our children from getting too sexualised too young, which is happening in many, many Maltese families with kids, dads and some mums locked into porn sites. Some of these Russians dancers who were pompously charged looked like blonde versions of our average Paceville loving teenage children to me, did you notice?
