Rabat-Mellieha 1-1

This is a fair result which leaves Rabat in the runners-up position, one point ahead of third-placed Mellieha.

Rabat played the better football throughout the first 45 minutes, going close early on through Kayne Said and Emanuel Muscat.

Rabat broke the deadlock on 18 minutes with Jonathan Bezzina beating Vella with a strong shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Gradually Mellieha came back with a reaction but they lacked incisiveness up front although they did go close through Kevin Gauci and William Borg. Rabat could have doubled their lead but a low shot by Adam Smeir was well saved by Vella.

During the second period Mellieha pressed forward and after going close through Ibrahim Tarik and David Fenech, they equalised in the 70th minute with William Borg finishing off from close-range following a David Fenech free-kick.

Rabat replied through a dangerous shot by Adam Smeir which was saved by Vella. In the closing stages Rabat gained the initiative but they were controlled by a solid Mellieha defence.

Melita-Dingli 3-2

The Amateurs obtained their seventh win in their best match of the season as they defeated leaders Dingli Swallows.

Melita dictated the first half with Dingli staging a reaction after the break.

The Amateurs played the better football throughout the first period and, after going close through Julian Galea and Mark Hyzler, they managed to break the deadlock in the 22nd minute with Julian Galea passing for Mark Hyzler to hit home from close-range.

Then the Melita custodian brought off two fine saves to deny Chris Ciappara and Edwin Casha but the Amateurs made it 2-0 in the 36th minute through Matthew Borg I.

At the other end Dingli were again denied by Carter off shots by Fabio Cauchi and Victor Fiteni but it was Melita who managed to score a third goal on 53 minutes through Julian Galea.

A minute later Dingli pulled a goal back through Chris Ciappara.

On the hour Dingli gained a penalty for a dubious foul on Darren Roe and Chris Ciappara made no mistake from the spot.

In the 81st minute Dingli could have equalised but Carter brought off two fine saves off shots by Roderick Spiteri and Jonathan Sapiano with the Amateurs being unlucky as a header by Matthew Borg I bounced off the crossbar.

Lija-B'Bugia SP 0-0

B'Bugia St.Peter's deserved the point they gained against promotion contenders Lija Athletic as the Saints had two players sent off.

After six minutes Lija went close through Giles Lanzon and then they created other goal scoring opportunities through Glen Barry and Brandon Lowell.

In the 29th minute Lija had their best opportunity with Colin Ciantar's cross from the right flank being headed just wide by Daniel Cremona. In the 40th minute a shot by Beppe Antignolo went just wide of the far post and a minute later B'Bugia suffered a severe setback when John Paul Barbara was sent off following indications by assistant referee Mercieca.

Lija continued to dictate the run of play during the second period and were close early on through Vince Camilleri.

B'Bugia came back with a shot by James Galea which was saved by Bonnici with Lija's response producing a Daniel Cremona shot which just missed the target.

On another occasion they were denied by Fardell off a Giles Lanzon free-kick with B'Bugia losing Patrick Muscat in the 89th minute as he was sent off for a second yellow card.

In injury-time Lija had their last opportunity with John Cauchi heading just wide from a Giles Lanzon free-kick.

Gudja Balzan 2-3

Balzan Youths managed to turn defeat into victory with a fine second half performance as they kept in touch with the teams challenging for promotion honours.

Gudja had a good first half as they created the better opportunities. After four minutes an Elvin Gauci corner-kick was dropped by the Balzan keeper Bonello with David Mamo clearing off the goal line and Stephen Orlando was on hand to shoot home for Gudja's lead. Balzan's reaction was weak with Gudja losing an easy chance through Elton Bugeja in the 25th minute.

Then Gudja wasted another opportunity through Brian Testaferrata and later on a shot by Elton Bugeja was well saved by Bonello.

In the opening five minutes of the second half Balzan scored two goals through Malcolm Tirchett and Antoine Sacco to take a 2-1 lead with Gudja however drawing level in the 65th minute through a penalty given for a handling infringement by Stefan Cauchi and converted by Elvin Gauci.

Then the Gudja keeper brought off a fine save to deny Tirchett but Balzan managed to get the all important decisive goal in the 81st minute through Antoine Sacco following good work by Aaron Agius.
