Hockey: The Hunters Tower YS Back in second place

Malta Independent Friday, 16 March 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

The Hunters Tower YS maintained their slim hopes of winning the national league alive, with a victory over BDO Hs in the only senior match played this weekend.

The previous Sunday, against leaders Ta’ Soldi, The Hunters Tower dominated most of the match building up a two goal lead (and missing a penalty) up to 20 minutes from the end and then they incredibly they self-destructed as Rabat fired in four goals to all but wrap up their sixth consecutive title.

During the first half The Hunters Tower YS found it hard to get round the Sliema defence as Tony Caruana Smith’s boys, now languishing at the bottom of the standings following Britannia Tours’ draw against Poiatti Qormi the week before, kept to their game plan; defending tightly and operating fast breaks which, however, only caused a couple of hick ups to the Young Stars defence.

A slip in concentration, early in the second half, allowed Edward Hughes a shot at goal and The Hunters Tower were one up. The game opened up now and it was The Hunters Tower who began to operate on the break but when they doubled the score it was from a short corner through Chris Attard. Sliema tried hard to get back into the goal but despite numerous short corners and a late, fine individual goal from Keith Vella they failed to pick up anything from the game.

The second round of the National League comes to an end on Sunday with two matches as Poiatti Qormi take on BDO Hs and Britannia Tours WH face The Hunters Tower YS. The post at stake? The runner up spot for Poiatti Qormi and The Hunters Tower and the wooden spoon for Britannia Tours and BDO Hs.
