Contrary to what this newspaper said last week, the rubble wall in a Mosta street (Triq il-Mithna, Attard, between Ta Qali and Mosta) did not collapse as a result of the rain but was pulled down by a contractor employed by the local council between Friday and Saturday, local election day in Mosta.
The job wasn’t finished by Saturday noon – and the road was left as is – with soil being carried down the road by the rains.
Further down the road one could have seen the removed walls.
Apparently this “development” – widening of the road plus construction of a pavement had long been approved by the local council – as can be checked on the Mepa website. Residents had written to the mayor and ADT long ago voicing their concern over the danger of this road – overspeeding cars/ no pavement/ dilapidated rubble walls etc but got no favourable reply from the mayor.
Another resident then collected signatures from residents urging the local council to take action on overspeeding cars but still it needed some strong words for the local council to take action.
A few days before the local council election they installed three sleeping policemen and on the eve of the elections they started pulling down the walls!
With a new majority now in office and a new mayor as well, residents are waiting to see if the works will continue. The rubble blocking the road was removed at the beginning of last week but the wall is still down and soil is seeping into the street, and matters will be worse if rains.
