The KSU elections, which will be held on Thursday, give students a chance to vote for the team that can best represent them. It is therefore essential that all university and Junior College students use this right to vote in an informed and mature way.

REACH is a group of 12 dedicated and active students from various student organisations and different backgrounds who got together and formed an independent team that is committed only to students. REACH does not have a particular political agenda to push and is only interested in faithfully representing students effectively, creating a sense of community on Campus, and being fully accessible and close to the students.

Unlike last year, when two independent teams contested the KSU elections, this year REACH will be contesting against two political organisations, SDM (Christian Democrats) and PULSE (Social Democrats). Since a general election is coming up, the strongest way to safeguard the rights and interests of all students is through an independent team.

Partisan politics in Malta have always caused divide and segregation. However, at university level this division should not exist, as before we are Nationalists or Labourites, we are students with common goals, ideas and needs.

If we take the example of divorce, the KSU executive cannot push a political agenda on the issue because it must be a reflection of what the student body believes. Therefore there is no point in being elected to the KSU based on Social Democrat or Christian Democrat agendas. KSU should be the united student voice.

REACH in KSU will be able to encourage debate among students and then carry out the necessary research to aid the Social Policy Commission to reflect what students truly believe without having a bias towards a particular political ideology. In addition to this, there is more to KSU than politics. Above all there is education, which should never be politicised.

This is why REACH has brought together members of this year’s KSU executive and new team members from various organisations to provide both a sense of continuity and to inject new energy and innovative ideas. Our main goal is to reach the students and create a KSU that matters and is closer to you.
