I refer to Daphne Caruana Galizia’s recent opinion piece in your newspaper entitled Focusing on the real victories, (TMID 15 March).

Firstly, I think the constant theme coming out from this article is sour grapes for Mrs Caruana Galizia. I doubt very much if the tone would have been the same if the results were reversed.

Secondly, Mrs Caruana Galizia asserts that “I don’t know and don’t care whether the mayor up in Mosta is Nationalist or Labour.” All very true for her, but surely this not a reflection of the mentality of the rest of the voting population given the historic parochialism and clientelism that Malta’s political system has been built on.

Nevertheless, I think that the powers that be at the Nationalist Party headquarters will not taking such a blasé attitude to this result and will be focusing on what the Nationalist Party needs to do to get all those lost votes back.

One thing is for sure, if the Labour Party still puts Mrs Caruana Galizia off, then there is nothing that the MLP can ever do to swing her vote.

I have one hypothetical question for Mrs Caruana Galizia and it relates directly to the birds and divorce issue. Were Alfred Sant to promise to a) make all hunting and trapping illegal and b) consider amending current legislation in order to legalise divorce, would she vote for the Labour Party?

Just in case you were all wondering what my position on all this is, I shall state it clearly. If I could vote at the next general election the only party which would get my vote would be the one which committed itself to make all hunting and trapping illegal, and to consider amending current legislation in order to legalise divorce. For me, it’s all or nothing. If these two issues were not in any party’s manifesto then I would simply not vote.
