Football – Bank Of Valletta Division III: Zurrieq enhance their promotion chances

Sirens did the attacking throughout the ninety minutes but they proved rather ineffective infront of goal as Mgarr United maintained their unbeaten record. Both teams sustained their promotion challenge.

After only two minutes Sirens had a dangerous opportunity through Adrian Galea and a minute later an error by Sirens’s central defender Kristian Galea allowed Mgarr’s striker Chris Abela to get through but he shot wide when all alone in front of goal.

In the 9th minute Sirens could have taken the lead but Adrian Galea’s strong shot was saved on te goal line by the Mgarr keeper Simon Gauci.

Then a Patrick Barbara shot was well saved by Gauci and on other occasions efforts by Ryan Theuma and Etienne Bonnici just missed the target.

In the 61st minute Sirens were denied by Gauci off an effort by Adrian Galea and on another occasion a shot by Gareth Magri was deflected to a corner-kick.

Mgarr went close through Neil Busuttil and late in the match Sirens’ veteran striker Adrian Galea hit just wide from close-range.

Zurrieq-Xghajra T 3-0

Zurrieq enhanced their promotion hopes after obtaining three very important points against Xghajra Tornadoes.

Xghajra could have taken the lead early in the game but Lizio Grech, all alone infront of goal, hit wide.

Zurrieq replied through a Robert Bajada which was deflected to a corner-kick and on other occasions efforts by Joe Lia and Daniel Zammit just missed the target.

Zurrieq were the better team after the change of ends with Jason Saliba giving them the lead in the 50th minute. Daniel Zammit made it 2-0 nine minutes later and they further increased their lead in the 83rd minute as an Abdilla corner-kick was finished off by Godfrey Chetcuti.

Attard-Kirkop 2-0

Attard obtained an important win against Kirkop Unitted through two second half goals scored by promising striker Elon Cassar. After five minutes Attard were denied by Formosa off a close-range shot by Mark Saliba and in the 14th minute Kirkop’s striker Chris Farrugia hit high when all alone infront of goal.

Attard responded through two attempts by Elon Cassar which just missed the target and at the other end Kirkop wasted another clear opportunity through Chris Farrugia.

Four minutes before the end of the first half a strong volley by Elon Cassar was splendidly saved by Kevin Formosa.

Attard were the better team during the second period and after going close through Daniel agius and Mark Saliba, they managed to score two quick goals through Elon Cassar in the 70th and 71st minute.

From then onwards Attard controlled Kirkop’s reaction.

Gharghur-Fgura 1-0

Although going close on various occasions, Fgura United ended the match empty handed suffering a severe blow in their promotion aspirations.

Fgura attacked for long stretches throughout the first half and early on went close through Aldo Pace whose shot just missed the far post.

They then created two opportunities through Clint Ellul and Matthew Spiteri with Gharghur gaining a free-kick in the 39th minute as Matthew Coleiro’s free-kick scraped the crossbar.

Just before the break Gharghur were this time denied by Renald Attard off another free-kick taken by Clifton Mifsud.

Three minutes after the restart a Gharghur defender cleared the ball off the goal line to foil Carl Camilleri. In the 50th minute a point-blank effort by Matthew Spiteri was saved by Edwards with Gharghur scoring from an indirect free-kick through Christian Glass and the goal was rightly annulled.

In the 80th minute Gharghur scored the all-important goal through Andre Cachia

Ghaxaq-Luqa SA 1-3

Mario Farrugia’s team, Luqa St Andrews, obtained their eighth win of the season to remain in touch with the teams challenging for promotion honours.

Ghaxaq showed the better football early on with Spiteri Sacco wasting a sitter after eight minutes.

On another occasion Ghaxaq were denied by Luqa’s defender Martin Dimech who cleared off the line to stop a shot by Bjorn Dalli but Ghaxaq deservedly took the lead on 26 minutes through the same player following good work by Francois Galea.

Luqa’s immediate reaction produced an equaliser two minutes later through Randolph Penza and they even took the lead through Alessandro Pirrone eight minutes before the break.

During the second period play resulted mainly in midfield with Luqa sealing their merited win in the 79th minute through Mark Said who surprised Celeste with a shot from outside the penalty area.

Siggiewi-St Lucia 2-1

Although Santa Lucia created the better chances throughout the 90 minutes, it was Siggiewi who managed to win the three points with Mario Borg getting the all-important goal.

After ten minutes the Saints were close through Joe Portelli and on another occasion successive efforts by Jesmond Schembri and Michael Sciberras Grioli were blocked by Vella.

Siggiewi replied through a Ciappara free-kick which was saved by Brincat but it was the Saints who took the lead in the 27th minute through Christian Curmi.

Siggiewi’s reaction produced a merited equaliser through Godfrey Camilleri in the 45th minute. Santa Lucia were the better team after the change of ends with Michhael Sciberras Grioli twice going very close.

Then a Schembri shot was saved by Vella and on another occasion Joe Catania missed a sitter. However in the 83rd minute it was Siggiewi who got the decisive goal through Mario Borg.
