Hockey – National league: Battle hots up for runner-up place

Malta Independent Thursday, 22 March 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

The second round of the hockey league came to an end on Sunday with reigning Champions Ta’ Soldi Rabat nine points clear of their nearest rivals.

The third round kicks off on Sunday and at the end of the day Rabat may be Champions once again…for the sixth consecutive season. Ta’ Soldi in fact take on BDO Hs and given the present form of both sides it would take a brave person to bet on BDO taking anything from the game. The second game will see The Hunters Tower YS face Poiatti Qormi in what is essentially a decider for the runner up spot.

Over the weekend both these teams won; Poiatti coming from behind against BDO and The Hunters Tower fairly easily against Britannia Tours WH. Against BDO, Poiatti Qormi were forced to field a number of U-16 players to make up for the absence of a number of players through injury and suspension.

At the end of the day they were still good enough to beat BDO despite falling behind to a Sandro Bartolo goal mid-way through the second half. Poiatti came back strongly and two goals from their captain, Daniel Micallef, turned the tables and kept them on course for the runner up spot.

In the second game The Hunters Tower YS swept aside Britannia Tours WH with an emphatic 7-1 victory. The Hunters Tower had a couple of players out through injury but a 3-0 cushion at half time made the going downhill against a Britannia Tours side without the services of the inspirational Borg Costanzi.

Former Britannia Tours hit-man, Luke Busutill Leaver notched up four goals, Chris Attard got three and Nicky Agius Darmanin got the seventh. Patrick Meli got the consolation goal for his side.
