How sad it was to read in yesterday’s Independent about the passing away of Pullu Demanuele, or “il-Koku”, as he was affectionately known by one and all.
He was truly one of the greatest Maltese football players of all time. Together with his equally great partner, Lolly Borg, they formed a formidable tandem that caused sheer terror in any defence in any opposing side.
Despite his superior skills for which he was greatly admired by all football lovers, he was a modest person, somewhat shy and taciturn, and never flaunted his huge popularity.
At 77, he was three years younger than me. I had the pleasure of knowing him both as a valiant opponent as well as a valued colleague when we played together on numerous occasions for the national side. He was a very clean player and well-liked by friend or foe alike. He will truly be missed.
Unfortunately, the outstanding players of what is justifiably known as “the golden era” of Maltese football are gradually dwindling in number and, sad to say, it won’t be too long before none are left. What a pity!
To his wife and family and to his friends and admirers, I offer my heartfelt condolences.
