Malta Independent Friday, 23 March 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Between this month and July, 60 IT employees within the private and public sector will follow a training programme organised by the Investment, Industry and IT Ministry in conjunction with IBM.

Last year, the ministry signed a vertical strategic alliance with IBM. This alliance consists of diverse ICT education and industry initiatives aimed to support the government’s efforts in promoting the information society and stimulating the growth of the ICT industry.

One of the ICT education initiatives is the Linux Education Programme, through which 60 persons who already work in the ICT industry ambit will certify themselves as Linux Entry Level Administrators. This programme will certify the competency in system administration using the Linux operating system and its associated tools. Four courses will be delivered including the Linux Power User, Linux System Administration, Linux TCP/IP Administration, and a course combining selected topics on Linux Bash Programming, Linux as a Firewall, Linux as a web server (Apache) and Linux integrating with Windows (Samba). The duration of each course is of one week. Training and certification of the 60 participants are sponsored by IBM.

The interest registered for this initiative from IT employees both from within the public and private sector exceeded the number of trainee seats available.
