Honestly, I can now bring myself to admit that a present day Utopia is possible. As a spectator of world current affairs and politics, I had recently arrived at a point in my life where I felt that any contrast to man’s history of violence and corrupt politics, was evident only to Platonic daydreamers and the ignorant. It seemed almost customary to hear about governmental red tape and scandals, so much so, that I sincerely admit that I had as much faith in authority as our non-practising Catholics do.

But it was only in the last few weeks during the local council elections, where it seemed to me that the local councils had resurrected in some form of social epiphany because, unexpectedly, their job description sank in. Our Beirut-style roads transfigured over the night, causing some to labour under the mistaken belief that the Queen would be visiting us again. One could stagger and blurt out patriotic odes to the unusual cleanliness of our towns and villages, but, like all grand things in life, this was not to last.

If everyday had to be in a pre election period, we would definitely have ourselves a true Utopia.
