Sarcasm has been described as the language of the devil. I shall therefore not reply to Judge Giovanni Bonello’s letter (TMIS, 18 March) steeped as it is in sarcasm and false representation (textual to boot).

Allow me however to quote from Dr Herbert Ganado’s (himself a deportee) acclaimed autobiography Rajt Malta Tinbidel. “Il-familja Mercieca tawhom id-dar tal-Maggur, tas-‘second in command’, tal-African Rifles. Kienet dar tal-‘bricks’ u tal-injam, helwa u mhux zghira zghira. Kellhom is-servitu Afrikana taqdihom. Monsinjur Pantallerersco kien maghhom, bhalma kien f’Malta u kellu kamartu bil-kamra tal-banju tieghu. Meta kont immur ghandhom, li kien kwazi kuljum, daqqa nidhol u nitkellem u niehu kafe, daqqa ghat-te u kultant ghall-ikel, kont inhossni iehor. Kien hemm ambjent semplici, intimu u sinjorili Malti li trabbejt fih.”

It is now time to move on. As citizens from Malta, Italy or Britain, we in the European Union are all committed to the great ideals of world peace and the UN (1948) Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
