San Gwann Keep slim hopes alive

Malta Independent Monday, 26 March 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

San Gwann kept their slim hopes alive by beating fellow relegation worried side Naxxar. This win lifts San Gwann from the bottom of the table, but they are still in deep relegation trouble.

Both sides needing desperately the three points to keep their slim hopes alive, played in attack and the match resulted in a spectacular one with San Gwann more dangerous in front of goal, and in the end this showed in their favour as they won this six-goal thriller.

On their part Naxxar had Anizoba in good form and he was Naxxar's most dangerous player.

San Gwann went close after eight minutes when Valencia hit the crossbar direct from a freekick from the edge of the area.

On 14 minutes San Gwann had another good scoring opportunity when from a Mauro Brincat perfect cross from the left, Cutajar headed slightly over the bar.

Two minutes later Naxxar had a golden opportunity when Peter Anizoba had a good personal effort but was denied by goalkeeper Justin Spiteri.

On 34 minutes Anizoba was again close to scoring but once again Justin Spiteri dived to save well.

Just before the break San Gwann had another golden opportunity with Mauro Brincat missing from close range following a melee in front of goal.

On 58 minutes San Gwann took the lead when Cutajar passed to the unmarked Roberto Brincat who beat Spiteri who was charging out of position. Minutes later San Gwann could have sealed the issue when Cutajar passed to Stajic who lobbed over the bar.

Naxxar equalised on 67 minutes when substitute Andy Bartolo managed to pass to Anizoba who beat Spiteri.

Four minutes later San Gwann were back in the lead when Arnold Galea's grounder found the back of the net following a corner action. Naxxar almost equalised again two minutes later but this time Catania's close range shot slammad against the upright.

Eleven minutes from time San Gwann seemd to have sealed the issue when Mauro Brincat first timed beautifully in the corner of the net a good Stajic cross, for one of the best goals of the season.

But the Lions' resistance was not over yet as Matthew Spiteri Gonzi scored from close range after Justin Spiteri could only partially save a fierce free-kick taken by Anizoba. But in the 90 th minute Nebiosa Stajic definitely put an end to this game when he scored the fourth and final goal with a shot from just inside the box.
